NURSE ANESTHETIST (CRNA)

JOB SUMMARY:
Provides anesthesia care in the Operating Room in support of surgical, diagnostic and, therapeutic procedures under general supervision of an anesthesiologist. Provides preoperative evaluation and postoperative follow-up. Meets the qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range on their assigned nursing unit.
Performs duties to provide the highest level of patient care and maximize patient satisfaction.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans and carries out anesthesia support. Confers with physician anesthesiologist to coordinate clinical management of patients.
- Conducts preoperative patient assessment based on anesthesiologist's initial assessment. Assesses patient's condition, and reviews the patient's chart, consultations, and lab reports. Interprets the data to evaluate and assess patient's needs as to the type of anesthesia to use and potential effects. Makes recommendations. Communicates with patients to answer questions and lessen patient's fears.
- Prepares the anesthesia process. Plans for the management of the anesthetic and selects appropriate anesthesia based on patient's history, needs, and preferences and the surgeon's requirements.
- Arranges for support equipment and proper procedures. Acquires the equipment, monitors, and drugs used for the procedure. Sets up equipment, checks for working order, and makes simple diagnostic checks if malfunctions occur. Notifies supervisor or designated person if equipment is not operational to assure repairs are made. Applies monitoring equipment following standard safety precautions and interprets data from monitors to use in clinical decisions. Coordinates with OR personnel to prepare OR for patients relative to surgeon and operation needs for positioning of patient, equipment, and anesthetist.
- Anesthetizes the patient. Prepares the patient for anesthesia, selects drugs for anesthesia and emergency treatment. Induces and maintains anesthesia. Monitors the patient's condition through observation of the patient and monitors. Makes adjustments as necessary. Informs surgeon of patient's condition during the process. Treats variants of the anesthesia and requests consultation from anesthesiologist as required. Informs anesthesiologist and Charge CRNA on the progress of the case and the patient's condition.
- Concludes the anesthetic process. Conducts process to have patient at proper level of consciousness at the end of the case and terminates the anesthetic. Transports or assists with transport of patient to Recovery Room or an intensive care unit. Oversees movement of patient to stretcher. Assures necessary monitoring equipment accompanies patient and provides airway management during transport.
- Reports patient's condition. Meets with a recovery room or intensive care nurse to discuss patient's condition and needs, anesthetics, and fluids administered, surgery performed, and complications. Works with the nurse to plan the recovery care of the patient in conjunction with the anesthesiologist. Assumes responsibility for recovery room care of patient in absence of anesthesiologist, following hospital protocol to provide appropriate follow-up.
- Performs documentation. Documents preoperative and postoperative activities, observations, etc, in patient's chart or other records. Documents post anesthesia visits and reports complications to anesthesiologist. Maintains a complete Anesthesia Record.
- Provides anesthesia support to Labor and Delivery Suite. Provides anesthesia coverage along with the anesthesiologist for C-sections in Labor and Delivery Suite. Assures availability of equipment and assistance before inducing anesthesia.
- Instructs students. Provides instruction and acts as a faculty member to student nurse anesthetists in the School of Anesthesia as required. Shares current knowledge of anesthesia practice. Develops teaching techniques. Serves on school committees as able. Attends faculty meetings, etc, to assist with identification and meeting student's educational needs.
- Provides staff development support. Provides instruction in airway management and anesthesia for recovery room nurses, and other personnel as required to assure basic understanding and appropriate technique.
- Provides airway management support to the hospital. Responds to requests from doctors or nurses to establish or check patency of patient's airways.
- Acts as a member of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation team as required. Acts as a member of monthly Morbidity and Mortality Conference and provides input, as able, regarding complications, etc.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned by emergency or other operational reasons for which the employee is qualified to perform.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
Ability to start A-lines, IV lines and Central lines.
Ability to insert Endobronchial tubes and use the Glide Scope, light wand and Intubating LMA.
Experience with Regional Anesthesia.
Must obtain and maintain BLS, ACLS
Demonstrates computer literacy, accurate and timely charting via Electronic Medical Record (EMR)

Participation in the holiday/weekend/call schedule as indicated
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
The successful CRNA candidate requires graduation from an accredited school of nurse anesthesia and an RN license or license-eligible in the State of Pennsylvania.
Graduate of an accredited school of nurse anesthesia and an RN license, or license-eligible, in the State of Pennsylvania required.
CPR certification required.
Eligibility to participate in, or have completed, an approved ACLS program required.
Knowledge of anesthesia practice and procedures required.
Maintenance of continuing education standards required.
Minimum six months on the job experience to become familiar with job duties and functions required.
